National Conference
National Engineering Week
The SHPE Conference is the largest technical and career conference for Hispanics in the country. Attracting over 5,000 engineering professionals, students and corporate representatives, the SHPE Conference provides an opportunity for engineering companies and corporations to recruit top talent from the high quality SHPE membership. It also provides educational, technical and career opportunities for professional and student engineers. Last year, SHPE de ASU sent about 25 undergraduate students to the National Conference. The effectiveness of the conference can be measured by the amount of students that got internships and full-time job offers. According to our stats, 4 students got full-time offers and 10 students got internship offers. By supporting our organization, your contribution will be directly impacting the future of our members.
In the spirit of National Engineers’ Week (E-Week), SHPE de ASU seeks to expand awareness of STEM and the opportunities in this field within the Hispanic youth of Arizona. SHPE de ASU visits high schools like George Gervin Preparatory Academy, Jack L. Kuban Grade School, Whitman Elementary School, Pan American Charter High School. For the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, SHPE also organizes on-site engineering team challenges. SHPE de ASU members partner up with professionals from companies like Boeing and Northstar Aerospace to create an environment where students can brainstorm, construct and test engineering concepts like structures, weight, mass and force. The main purpose of these activities is to highlight the importance of communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skill in STEM fields. E-week is the perfect time to create awareness of STEM in students of diverse grades.

Battle of the SHPE’s

Salsa Night
The purpose of the SHPE de ASU vs SHPE UA softball game was to enjoy a great game with those individuals from the University of Arizona Chapter. SHPE de ASU and SHPE of UA love to compete on the field in soccer and softball, and this year was no exception. Thus, it allowed us to socialize with and compete through a healthy game of softball, as well as sharing ideas for chapter development. The main purpose of the activity is to engage in healthy competition game between SHPE de ASU vs SHPE UA softball. The layout for the event was to play the softball game after a few minutes of warming up. Once the game was completed, both chapters networked over delicious grilled food and drinks. The SHPE de ASU vs SHPE UA is a very prestigious event in our calendar. Also, the winner of the softball game received the “Battle of the SHPE’s” trophy. In this case, SHPE de ASU got to keep the trophy after winning the game.
This past year SHPE and MAES (Latinos in Science and Engineering) came up with the idea of having a Salsa Night where members of both clubs could network with one another. Invites will be sent to organizations such as: HBSA, Epsilon Alpha Beta, and El Concilio, in order to increase the networking opportunity of the members. This event will serve to continue creating a bond with the organizations involved that will hopefully lead to future collaborations with SHPE de ASU. A DJ will be hired to provide the music. Drinks, chips and salsa were provided as light refreshment for the dancers. Tables will be set off to the side for people to sit down, rest, and socialize. Members of each club will hopefully make up the majority of the attendees which provides a friendly environment for members to network with members of other clubs. Canned food items will be collected at the event to benefit the St. Mary’s Food Bank.

 Junior Chapter Family Reunion
End-of-The-Year Banquet (Passing of the Torch)
The purpose of this activity is to bring Jr. Chapters together to network with each other and with our SHPE de ASU members. The students talk with one another, learn about the different types of engineering, and get more information about the process to get into college. During this activity, SHPE Jr. Chapters usually work on their MESA Day projects to compete at MESA Day State Competition. Students spend a day on campus at ASU, starting by working on their MESA Day projects, followed by a student panel from SHPE de ASU. After the panel, the students enjoy some food for lunch and ask questions about all the engineering majors at ASU and the application process. This event concludes with a tour of Arizona State Tempe campus by SHPE de ASU members.
The banquet will be held at the end of the year to recognize SHPE de ASU’s many triumphs throughout the year. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy dinner at the beginning of the event and listen to a guest speaker from chosen Industry Representative who will talk about his/her life as an engineer. Additionally, awards will be given out to members who show a lot of dedication to SHPE de ASU. The awards include: Members of the Month and random (fun) awards for specific members. The bigger awards that will be handed out are female/male intramural MVP of the year and Upper/Lower Classmen of the year. The night will end with the 2015-2016 E-Board introducing the E-Board for the 2016-2017 school year.

Noche de Ciencias

Regional Leadership Development Conference (RLDC)
The purpose of this event is to reach out to Title I K-12 schools and show them the opportunities that are available for them. Our chapter holds a “Noche de Ciencias” event about 2 times per semester. The activities that we create for this event are geared toward STEM fields. The reason for establishing this foundation is because of the message that we would like to give these students. This industry is highly underrepresented within the Hispanic community. Teaching these kids about the endless opportunities, in regards to their future, is a key factor that we try to pinpoint when showing them what they could accomplish if they take advantage of the resources presented to them. These resources are also presented to the parents. We provide all the information necessary to get them started on being able to financially help their child during their journey through college. As Hispanic college students, we feel that it is our responsibility to carry on the tradition of helping our community as others have done for us in the past.
This annual SHPE conference is held in every region of the country with the purpose of fostering an environment to help students further develop their leadership, technical and management skills. RLDC is meant to give, both new and uprising leaders the opportunity to evolve their skill set. It is a 2-3 day conference filled with workshops that will teach each participant the essential skills needed to transfer over into the professional world.
