History

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community.
The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.

To better understand the significance of our organization’s impact on it’s members and sponsors, it’s crucial to learn about the history of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). This organization was formed in 1974 by a group of engineers in Los Angeles, CA. Their founding principle was to cultivate a national organization that would provide engineering role models for the Hispanic community. What started as a two-student organization has blossomed into a vast social network of thousands of Hispanic engineers from all over the country. For over forty years SHPE's vision has been to see a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers. The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.

The executive board has been diligently working to provide essential opportunities and leadership capabilities to build a community of determined students to leave a footprint in the engineering field. Here at SHPE de ASU, our members are encouraged to be themselves, build relationships with peers, friends, and professionals, and really understand what it feels like to be a part of the SHPE familia. Since the 80s, SHPE de ASU has been building upon the bas set by our co-founding founders from SHPE National. These pillars are the following:

Academic Development
SHPE de ASU gives students the resources and tools necessary to succeed academically through study sessions, study groups, private tutors and events like semana de estudios to prepare students for final exams.

Community Outreach
High effort is made to reach out to the community to educate students on STEM opportunities and increase the number of hispanics pursuing engineering degrees.

Professional Development
The organization prides itself it’s professionalism with several opportunities  for members to network with companies, attend workshops, and travel the world at national and regional conferences.

Leadership Development
This pillar is heavily taken into consideration as there are several opportunities to take the initiative to run for executive positions, plan events, join committees, attend leadership conferences to become a well rounded leader

Chapter Development
SHPE de ASU challenges itself to provide a safe space and familia environment to unite members as a community bound by culture and heritage with events like Salsa Night and Welcome Back BBQs.

Our goal is to create activities that target each of these pillars so our members gain a greater organizational knowledge to help them achieve success in their personal lives. We strongly believe that philanthropy and leadership involvement are the gateways to personal growth. When this organization was founded, it sought to create true leaders and professionals who could serve as role models to society. This is why SHPE de ASU strives to develop competitive, professional, and well-rounded individuals. We seek to give our members the tools they need to reach their respective goals. This exceptional pool of talent creates a workforce comprised of highly motivated, productive, and astute leaders.
